  • Description: A snow melt system was designed using Pex tubing laid below a new bluestone sidewalk at the entrance to the premise. ConEd steam condensate was redirected to the snow melt system to reclaim it’s heat instead of directly discharging to the sewer system where this heat would be wasted. This method allows for a free heating source to aid in the melting of snow on the sidewalk. A glycol feed system is implemented into the snow melt system to automatically deliver a mixture to the outside loop to prevent freezing and potential bursting of the Pex tubing. An electronic control system with sensors were implemented to automatically control the temperature of the slab so that once snow is sensed the system would automatically increase heat output. A secondary steam heat exchanger was added to this system to add any additional heat required to effectively melt the snow.
